Swedish (classic european) Massage

European Swedish Massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are effleurage (light touch), petrissage (kneading), friction (compression), tapotement (rhythmic tapping) and vibration. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee over a period of eight weeks. The development of Swedish massage is credited to Per Henrik Ling though the Dutch practitioner Johan Georg Mezger adopted the French names to denote the basic strokes.

This course enables participants to learn a safe effective series of European Swedish movements and classic routines from which to carry out a full body massage including relevant indications, contraindications and precautions. Since the foundations of many massage techniques stem from this modality, the movement techniques help the student develop basic massage strokes, body centering, and palpation of muscles. This course also covers body mechanics, draping, the use of oils and lotions, introduction to client interaction, introduction to manual healing therapy, and touch as a healing modality.
